Of course you get what’s fast becoming known as ‘Book Club Fiction.’ These books typically don’t fit into any particularly category and are attractive to many people for their themes, etc.
But when writing, do you ever think to yourself: ‘Though this may not fit directly into the genre of X, I’m going to tweak it a bit, or put a new spin on it because more readers would enjoy it?’ Or maybe change it in order to attract different readers.
I don’t think there’s any right or wrong, as most of the time it’s all about execution.
But I’m curious on what you think.
